For wine lovers, beer drinkers and locals who love a chat, Fine Wine Merchants is a regular stop next door to ShopAte, where Marcus and Stewie are on hand to recommend a bottle of something cheap and cheerful or advise on how to keep everyone from getting thirsty at a celebration. Best of all, if you’re in the mood, it’s the perfect pit-stop to get a good account of the goings on about town.
One side of the business not so well known by the casual customer is the extensive collection of fine and rare wines from France, Italy and closer to home. Whilst Burgundies that run into the thousands aren’t an every day quaffer, there’s an inexhaustible selection of wines to suit the most discerning palate. (Rumor has it a Victorian premier, who may or may not have the initials DA, is one of the businesses biggest customers.)
The shop really began as an outpost to a fine wine importing business founded by Stewart in 2012 on Main Street. With the shop in The Village, you’ll often see him now walking to work along Canadian Bay Road, getting in his daily exercise as he tries to shorten extended conversations with almost everyone he passes.
Both Marcus and Stewie were drawn to Mount Eliza when family became a priority. The access to beaches, friendly people and loyalty all come together to set the stage for a quality of life that’s unparalleled anywhere else. “And dog-friendliness,” says Marcus, who can be seen with his Boxer on the fire tracks around Earimil. “I reckon that’s a big drawcard.”
With Flemington race days coming up and more people allowed to come together after three months in lockdown, now is the perfect time to consider celebrating with a special bottle or two from the boys. Whether it’s bubbles, mixers, boutique spirits or even a non-alcoholic wine, Fine Wine Merchants is one of Mount Eliza’s favourite places to pass the time and catch up on the burning issues.
We asked for Marcus and Stewie’s Five Live Loves and no surprises they’re tied to the social and lifestyle elements we all love about Mount Eliza.
Live for the beaches - “Too many to have a favourite.”
Love the people - Loyal and friendly
Live for the quality of life - Schools, access to everything
Love the Redlegs - “The largest club in the southern hemisphere by membership.”
Love the dog friendliness - Of course!
